Is It Time to Swap Your Toothbrush Out for a New One?
Let's find out…

How long do you think you’ve been using your current toothbrush? If you can’t remember when it was introduced to your bathroom counter, then we might have a problem on our hands (or rather, a problem in your hand)!

Generally, it’s recommended that a person swaps out their oil toothbrush every three or so months, or when they start to notice wear or fraying on the bristles. But why is this so?

Well, our Hamilton dentist has three reasons why it’s a smart idea to replace that old toothbrush regularly:

  1. Frayed bristles could be causing damage.
Worn brush bristles are actually more abrasive on the teeth and gums since they’ve lost their intended shape. Enamel wear and gum recession could occur as a result of using a frayed tooth brush.
  2. Bacteria is yucky… and an old toothbrush has a lot of it.
If you tend to not regularly disinfect your toothbrush bristles, a lot of bacteria can collect on them over time – thus entering your mouth every time you go to clean it. If you don’t, practice rinsing your brush under the tap after every use along with disinfecting the bristles every so often. This will help to keep your toothbrush cleaner for a longer time.
  3. Old bristles don’t clean as well.
Out-of-shape brush heads don’t do nearly as well of a job removing debris and bacteria from the teeth… so if you’ve been using that current toothbrush for too long, this is a really good reason to ditch it and upgrade!

Well, how’s your current toothbrush lookin’? Still in shape? Maybe somewhere in-between? If it’s time to swap it out, don’t wait any longer!
